Smokestacks Coming Down According to this story in the News-Journal, Florida Power and Light is dismantling two tall smokestacks at its plant on the St. Johns River in Sanford. The oil-fired boilers they're attached to have been replaced by gas burners. The smokestacks have been there, near the I-4 bridge across the St. Johns at Lake Monroe, since I can remember. FPL's information on the changes at the Sanford plant is located here. There's an old municipal power plant (Enterprise, Florida?) on the other side of the bridge that's, to my knowledge, unused. It's a yellow brick building with five or six small stacks; i.e., it looks like a lot of older municipal power plants. I'm surprised it's still standing. |
